LINE OF SIGHT: THREE WORDS TO IMPROVE EMPLOYEE ENGAGEMENT

May 30, 2017

Want to improve employee engagement? One key thing to keep in mind is that employees want to understand how and where their individual role fits into the overall purpose and vision of the company.

Employees need a "line of sight" between their role and the company's "Big Hairy Audacious Goal." In his book, Good to Great, Jim Collins describes a "Big Hairy Audacious Goal" as an objective great companies develop and pursue through time that is so challenging they might not accomplish it, but were inspired to figure it out successfully.

Set clear expectations, a "line of sight," to help the overall team, and individual team members, grasp where their roles, actions, key performance indicators (KPIs) and results feed into the company's ultimate ability to reach its vision.

In his book, The Great Game of Business, Jack Stack shares a powerful story of teaching employees about KPIs. Employees on the frontlines are often fearful of complicated financial terms that come with KPIs, but after passionately and diligently investing in teaching employees across Springfield Remanufacturing Corporation about financial metrics, the company's performance accelerated and employees became very engaged in the process and outcome.
